New Curated Vox-L Mods

We’ve specifically made some mods that are playable in your browser using the Vox-L game engine! But of course these mods should work in Minecraft too. LearnToMod modders can explore and remix this code to create their own mini-games:

Vox-L Arena Mod

Check out the new Vox-L Arena Mod — Grab your sword and shield and get ready to fight off a wave of zombies in the battle to end all battles!

Vox-L Hallway of Doom!

The Vox-L Hallway of Doom — Fight for your life in this wave-based survival mod!

Want to make your own Vox-L mod? Carlos, one of our LearnToMod devs, has released an quick-and-easy tutorial on the Forums.

Vox-L Release 0.12

We’re excited about the new 0.12 release of our Vox-L game engine! There are some fixes and new features that LearnToMod users will be psyched about:

Bug fixes
* Music volume is now set to 0 by default.  Can be increased via music artifact.
* All assets, including light sabers, should now display correctly in the character’s hand when viewed in the character window.
* When items are obtained, they will correctly “stack” in your inventory.
UI Changes
* When items are obtained, they no longer are added to your hotbar.  They can be dragged there from the main inventory window, though.
* A 3×3 crafting window now pops up when you press ‘e’.  You can drag items to and from it.
Artifacts
* The “block drops” artifact now causes blocks to be removed from the inventory when you place them — more consistent with Minecraft survival mode.
* New – Basic recipes artifact.  Adds Minecraft-style recipes for swords and axes.
* New – Give all items artifact.  Gives you all items and blocks when Voxl loads.  Waits for 30 seconds before doing this, so that it can include items and blocks defined by other artifacts.
All Items in Vox-L

Nab this Vox-L Artifact in the Artifacts shop!

Javascript API
* Recipes can now be defined via javascript.  See new recipe artifact source code for example.
* “Loot window” can now be populated and popped up via javascript.  Example: me.setLootWindowItems([“Diamond”, “Cactus”]).  Items can be dragged between the loot window and the player’s inventory window.

Version 0.11 was released this morning, shortly after our version 0.10 release last week, to patch the Vox-L music bug some users were facing and to release the start of a new inventory system in Vox-L!

New Vox-L Inventory System

There’s definitely more to come for customizing your Vox-L character and using the new inventory system! Here are the actual release notes from the developers:

Music:
* New artifact: Lets you set the default music volume
* Without the artifact, the music volume is 0.2 (much quieter than before)

Inventory:
* Pressing ‘e’ brings up an inventory window and a character window.
* Character window shows a rendering of the player’s avatar with items equipped.
* Items can be dragged between the two windows and the hotbar. (NOTE: dragging only works in the downloaded version currently. Will work in the browser on the next release.)

New Curated Mods

Our team has been working on some pretty fantastic Minecraft mods this week! But feel free to take our code, remix it, and make it your own. That’s what we’re here for!

Star Wars Force Mod

Paintball Mini-Game Mod

In the Paintball Mini-Game Mod, play a multiplayer paintball game with your friends – Eggs vs. Snowballs! The arena is different EVERY TIME!

OP Sword Mod

It’s time to one-hit kill some Ender Dragons with the OP Sword Mod. What other weapons could you make OP? Remix this mod and find out!

Vox-L version 0.10 is live on LearnToMod!

The release notes from the developers reveal tons of awesome new features to play with:

World Persistence:
* Changes made in Vox-L worlds will now be saved automatically
* Schematics will be automatically created out of things you build in Vox-L
* Editing these schematics in the schematic editor will change the in-Vox-L structures and vice versa
* Schematics from can be loaded into Minecraft and vice versa (was already a feature, but more significant now that schematics are generated automatically in Vox-L)
Player is now a physical object:
* Player will get knocked back by attacking creatures
* Player can push other physical objects out of the way
* Player is affected by gravity blocks (see below)
* Player’s head bobs when player lands

New Weapon Artifacts:
* Black hole wand
* Sun wand
* Diamond wand
* Fire sword
* Lightning Mace
Light Saber Artifact

Use the force inside of Vox-L! Check out the new Light Sabers in the Artifacts Shop!

* Light Saber Pack:
    * Blue
    * Red
    * Green
    * Purple
Custom Block Artifacts:
* Pack of 6 Mario-themed blocks
Mario-themed Blocks in Vox-L

Ready to break some blocks, Mario-style? Check out the new Mario Blocks in the Artifacts Shop!

* Pack of 25 spaceship themed sci-fi blocks
Gameplay Artifacts:
* Gravity block (attracts nearby physical objects — NPCs, players, balls, block drops, etc.).  Multiple gravity blocks can be used in tandem to multiple physical forces on things.
Gravity Block in Vox-L

This green block has a gravitational pull! WHAT!? Check out the new Gravity Block in the Artifacts Shop!

* Block drops — Breaking blocks will drop an item pickup of the broken block’s type.
UI:
* Downloaded Vox-L will display “Loading…” in bottom left when the in-game browser is loading (helps ameliorate the feeling that the game is not responding when you click a UI element that loads a new page).
* Downloaded Vox-L’s normal blockly coding interface (non-badges) now has a back button in the tool bar.
* Web version loads slightly faster when you have large numbers of artifacts or a large persistent world

Tons of New Badges this Month

If you haven’t noticed under the Learn tab, this past month 5 new sets of badges were added for making some really awesome new mods! Let’s take a look at what mods we’ll learn how to make:

Pokemon Mod Badges

Pokemon-Inspired Mods

In the “Gotta Catch Some” badge set, you’ll learn how to catch mobs in snowballs (which we’ll make look like Pokeballs), add them to your inventory, and summon them whenever you want! While we can’t make Mobs that look like Pokemon (YET!), you can still learn how to write a mod to “catch ’em all”  and become the ultimate Mob collector!

Star Wars Mod Badges

Star Wars Mod

In the “Star Wars” badge set, you’ll learn how to write a mod that allows you to manipulate the force in Minecraft: create force lightning, flings blocks left and right, and brainwash the minds of Mobs. You’ll even be using a light saber!

Mario Mod Badges

Mario Mod

In the “Mamma Mia!” badge set, you’ll learn how to make a mod that will let you stomp on creatures and break brick blocks with your head! You’ll also learn how to give yourself different Mario power-up effects, like Fireballs & Flying!

Herobrine Mod Badges

The HeroBrine Mod

Have you ever wanted to scare your friends by making Herobrine appear for them on your server? Spooky… In this scary mod, you’ll make a Herobrine appear and throws skulls at the feet of anyone who gets near.

Avenger's Mod Badges

The Avenger’s Mod

Play Minecraft like Iron Man and Black Widow would! In the Avenger’s Mod badge set, you’ll learn how to mod yourself with all the cool abilities from the Avenger’s!

More to come…

We’ve been working on lots of cool new mod features! Keep an eye on the Artifacts shop for new multi-colored glowstones that are sure to light up your day. 🙂

Just in time for the holiday season, we’re rolling out an awesome new set of how-to-mod tutorials on LearnToMod!

Train Your Sidekick Tutorials

Want to learn how to train a creeper to be your sidekick? (Or what about an Enderman or Cow?) I hope you answer with a resounding YES because that’s the correct answer! 😉 Want your sidekick to attack your enemies? We’ll teach you how to do that! Want to customize the way your sidekick looks? We gave our creeper sidekick, Billy, a sweet pair of pink shades. Our new badge series will teach you how to mod the AI (“artificial intelligence”) of a Minecraft mob and how to edit the texture of a Minecraft mob with our Texture Pack Painter tool! Let the games begin! Share your sidekicks with us here on the blog or tweet us a video using our Twitter handle @learntomod!

Creeper Sidekick

Javascript Mini-Game

Although Javascript modding has been available for several months, we’ve released our first Javascript tutorial series! (FINALLY, right?) This tutorial series is aimed to help our experienced Blockly modders begin the epic transition to Javascript modding! We work through a simple monster arena mini-game mod, but we take one step at a time to turn all that Blockly into Javascript!

New Look for the Learn Tab

The Learn page has a new look! Most of the LearnToMod badges you’re used to seeing are under the “Skills and Drills” category! Why is there broccoli pictured there? Well, because as my wise mom used to say, “you have to eat your broccoli before you can have your dessert”. Skills & Drills are necessary evils in life (like broccoli), and you need to do a bunch of these before you’ll be truly prepared for the fun tutorials, like the new Javascript Mini-Game & Sidekick tutorials! Of course, we hope our Skills & Drills are more fun than broccoli, but you get the metaphor now, right?

There are now new quests that recommend LearnToMod badges for you to try! Do the badges to earn more diamonds and experience points! It takes a lot of diamonds to purchase multiplayer Vox-L… I wonder who’s going to get to purchase it first!

Take the new Quests feature for a test-drive right now!! There’s only 2 Quests available right now, but keep coming back for MORE!

Vox-L Game Engine

Our 1st Quest is to test out Vox-L! What’s Vox-L? Vox-L is a browser game that’s compatible with Minecraft mods, texture packs, worlds, and schematics, but Vox-L is also extendable beyond Minecraft. In the future, Vox-L could be compatible with other voxel-based games!

Vox-L Quest Demo

What are voxels, you ask? Voxels are just cubes, and voxel games are just games based in these 3-dimensional grid/cube worlds. A ton of games are voxel-based, including all these fun games on Steam.

Rotating Voxel Cube

We’re just piloting Vox-L right now, and making sure it works on all the usual browsers & operating systems, but soon Vox-L might be what you test your Minecraft mods in before you launch them to your private Minecraft server! All the power of a voxel game engine in your browser!

If you’re not a current LearnToMod user, you can find more information about LearnToMod’s Features here!
